PLUGGED IN: The True Toxicity of Social Media Revealed - OUT NOW
The amount of individuals who have a SMART phone is expected to exceed 2.5Million in the year 2019, which is up from 2.1Million in 2016. This means many of us will be Plugged In and ready to go when 5G hits in 2020, which comes with many of its own issues as disgusted in my latest episode of Glitch In The Code Podcast, with Dr Robin Kelly. In January my company Brick In The Wall Media released our new documentary Plugged In: The True Toxicity of Social Media Revealed with Executive Producer Richard Grannon, who is also known as The Spartan Life Coach. In its first two weeks it has been seen by over 34,000 viewers and is growing all the time.

The film looks at the effect that unlimited social media and SMART usage is having on young people who are born Digital Natives and includes in depth and groundbreaking interviews between Richard Grannon and Sam Vaknin, who is the author of Malignant Self Love: Narcissism Revisited (2015) and is the worlds leading expert in Narcissistic Personality Disorders.
Making the documentary was an incredible journey for me which began back in August in last year, with the idea being to produce a short 30-40 minute documentary about CPTSD and young people. We soon realised that many of the recent psychological issues that young people were having could be traced back to Social media and SMART phone uses. This threw a curveball in the film and I had a great time directing the message and flow of the film, as well as being able to be creative with the Digital Style and tone which purposely leads you through a high paced social media scrolling digital style at the beginning and out the other end in a natural calming pace.
It was fascinating to see that Social Media usage was actually high priority as a worry for digital natives themselves who are fully aware that this technology is given them a false sense of connection but that they are not totally plugged in to this way of navigating their lives. Sam Vaknin coined the term 'Digital Natives' in the film and he talks in depth about the true nature of why social media was implemented in the first place (backed up by those who actually worked at Facebook from the start) and the possible devastating effects not limited to anxiety and depression, cyber bullying and anti social behaviour but ultimately self harm and suicide.
Myself and Richard Grannon will be at The Best You Expo in London on the 15th and 16th of February to promote the film and the forthcoming Plugged In website which will push forward this new digital psychology started by our film. If you can make it then we would love to see you there and please share the full documentary which is available above, as Richard is looking to visit schools up and down the UK to give talks on the hidden toxicity of social media and SMART phone usage.
